Advanced Retail Sales
This statistic measures total sales in dollars at all retail outlets. Retail spending constitutes a particularly large percentage of consumer spending. As such, retail output is a very good estimator of total consumer spending in the U.S. economy and overall consumer confidence. Since consumer spending makes up a large fraction of overall goods spending, ARS serves as a good indicator of current domestic GDP, and trends in ARS can foreshadow trends in GDP.
