Representing the United States is both a huge honor and a huge responsibility. When you are in a foreign country as a representative of the US, everything you do is a representation of the United States as a whole. This is why Foreign Service officers are chosen very carefully. At any given time, there are hundreds of diplomats in the countries of the world. Other than being ambassadors of the United States, people who are engaged in foreign services also function as peacemakers when the need arises. Due to the nature of their jobs, Foreign Service officers are expected to conduct themselves with grace and pride. The US Department of State, referred to as the State Department, is in charge of US foreign policy and relations.
